Demo Description:
In a two-hour period at Village Social of Habersham animal portrait artist, Peggy Watkins will demonstrate the steps she takes to create an oil portrait of a dog’s head and neck using a photograph as reference. In addition to covering how to translate a photograph into a painterly but realistic work of art, she will cover how to paint expressive eyes and how to suggest fur. Peggy will be happy to answer questions throughout the process. A small collection of Peggy’s work will be on exhibit and available for purchase. Light refreshments will be served.
If there is enough intrest in commisioning individual pet portraits, Peggy will come back to hold a 4 day work shop early in the new year to complete those. Please bring a picture of your pet so Peggy can discuss canvas sizes and pricing.
Brief Biography:
Peggy Watkins has been a professional animal artist for twenty-five years. Her works are featured in collections across the country and can be found in famous Lowcountry locales and events such as the Willcox Hotel in Aiken, Brays Island, and Charleston’s Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. Peggy works in a “painterly but realistic” way. She says, “I feel it is up to the artist to capture the essence and the dignity of the animal. An artist’s role is to reveal to people what they do not see. In this way, a familiar subject can be seen in a new light”. She works exclusively in oil paint and the dog is a frequent subject of her work. She and her husband recently moved to Aiken, SC but for eight years prior, they lived on their farm outside of Yemassee, SC.
