PAT CONROY LECTURE SERIES NIGHT 6 - Our Prince of Scribes: Writers remember Pat Conroy, with Tim Conroy, Cassandra King, and Ellen Malphrus

Best-selling writer Pat Conroy (1945–2016) inspired a worldwide legion of devoted fans numbering in the millions, but none are more loyal to him and more committed to sustaining his literary legacy than the many writers he nurtured over the course of his fifty-year writing life. In sharing their stories, his fellow writers honor his memory and advance our shared understanding of his lasting impact on literary life in and well beyond the American South. Winner of 17 book awards, the anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy is a collection of remembrances from 67 writers befriended, beloved, taught, mentored, and championed by Conroy—and no two stories are the same. Neither are any two panel discussions among the contributors.

Join us at Village Social on Monday, February 23, 5:00-6:00 p.m., for a lively conversation, moderated by Our Prince of Scribes co-editor and Pat Conroy Literary Center executive director Jonathan Haupt and featuring a trio of contributing writers: Conroy’s brother Tim (author of two poetry collections, most recently No True Route), Conroy’s widow Cassandra King (New York Times bestselling author of fiction and nonfiction, most recently Tell Me a Story), and USC Beaufort writer in residence Ellen Malphrus (author of Untying the Moon).

CREATIVE WRITING CLASS WITH LOCAL AUTHOR, PAT BRANNING

ALL NEW STUDENTS WELCOME!!

Instructor: Pat Branning, author of seven bestselling books on the Lowcountry and the voice behind the bi-weekly Substack The Diary of a Southern Author at patbranning.com.

There is a moment—quiet, persistent—when a story asks to be told.

Not a grand story.

Not a polished one.

Just yours.

Our most enduring stories are often found in small moments:

the kitchen table where conversations linger,

a handwritten recipe passed down,

a walk through the neighborhood at dusk,

a front porch where time slows and memories surface.

Writing is an act of noticing.

Of honoring what shaped us.

Of giving our lived moments a place to rest and be remembered.

Through gentle prompts, shared reflection, and thoughtful discussion, participants will learn to trust their instincts, shape everyday experiences into story, and build a writing practice grounded in curiosity rather than perfection.

No prior writing experience is required.

Only a willingness to show up and be present.

Your voice doesn’t need fixing.

It needs honoring.

INTERACTIVE MURDER MYSTERY DINNER

INTERACTIVE MURDER MYSTERY DINNER

Join at Village Social Habersham for facinating evening of interactive entertainment!

Author Laura Elizabeth Smith of Atlanta and The Island Mysterys, is flying in to host a Murder Mystery Dinner Event based on her play, A SPECIAL KIND OF HEARTACHE. We need a minimum of 20 participants and if we have enough interest we will host a second night on Saturday, March 14th. Tickets are available for purchase at the bottom of this event listing. Dont delay…because space is limited and this event is likely to sell out quickly!

Dinner Menu is still to be determined and will be posted on this listing closer to the event date.

Laura spent her childhood summers on Daufuskie Island, and the setting of this play takes place on a similar island. It about a group of friends who go on trip together and something happens and the mystery is solved during the evening.

The play is divided into 4 acts - people can choose to play the same character for all scenes OR others can pick up in a different scene and play that character.

Here is description of the evening by Laura…

  • I provide the scripts and the voting cards (the audience will vote at intermission after the third scene to see if they can guess the criminal)...then we will finish the show and reveal if they were correct. Anyone who has voted correctly will be entered into a raffle for a prize (which I provide).

  • The interactive show is a scaled down version of the book so that we can accommodate venues without scenery and audiences reading the script for the very first time that night.

  • Costumes are encouraged but not required

  • You do not have to read the book (and it is often more entertaining if they haven't read it) - I encourage people to make this their own story - and lean into the characters and the setting.

  • Before the show begins, I set the scene of the island and explain the characters and a synopsis of the story. After each scene I will briefly recap what has happened and what are some of the challenges uncovered.

  • The play is about 45-60 minutes - so typically the events are for about 2hours.

  • During the dinner, I usually speak to the audience about writing a book (especially a mystery), why I wrote these books.

  • Target audience - book clubs, girl’s groups, supper clubs and anyone who enjoys a light-hearted mystery - my books are cozy mysteries, where the amateur sleuth solves the crime

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS…

Lowcountry Etiquette, a local business teaching manners to children in the Charleston area, offers classes to children of all ages and teaches classes on table manners, handshakes, introductions, the art of conversation, thank you notes, kindness and respect.  Run by Beverly Sumner, Grayson LeVeen and Price Sigal, this mother daughter team has decades of experience teaching manners and etiquette to children.

Beverly has over 33 years of experience teaching manners and etiquette to children in North Carolina. A former high school teacher with over 15 years of classroom experience, she recently relocated to Charleston to be near her four children and 13 grandchildren. Grayson, Beverly’s oldest daughter, was raised in the world of etiquette and ballroom dance. She has co-led classes with Beverly for children of various ages and brings a nurturing, enthusiastic presence to every session. Grayson is a certified instructor with Bar Method Charleston on Daniel Island and the mother of four children. Price, Beverly’s younger daughter, also grew up helping with her mother’s etiquette programs. As a teenager, she worked weekends as an assistant dance instructor. Price is also a practicing attorney and mom to three energetic children.

Lowcountry Etiquette holds classes in large group settings for their signature "French Fries and Thank You" classes, that include multiple weeks of teaching during a 3 course meal.  They also  have had smaller and more focused classes such as "Little Miss Manners," and "Junior Gentleman"for Kindergarten through third graders, and  "Chat and Thank You" for middle schoolers.  Recently, they offered a special mother-daughter tea party that focused on tea etiquette, in addition to the art of conversation and ladylike manners.  They also team private classes and hold pop-ups in areas surrounding Charleston as well.

The ladies of Lowcountry Etiquette just published a book about teaching manners to children, and is cleverly titled French Fries and Thank You: A Guide to Making Manners Fun.  The title, named after their signature class, French Fries and Thank You, was to imply that manners education can actually be fun for children.  Through direct and concise methods in the book, Beverly, Grayson and Price take parents and teachers, step by step through all different aspects of proper etiquette, from dining at home or dining at a restaurant, handshakes, introductions, thank you notes, responding to invitations, manners games and trivia, and more.  Perhaps the most charming aspect of the book is that it is dedicated to Beverly's mother, Sudie Wilson, who started this family business in 1967 in Rock Hill, SC.  She encouraged her daughter and granddaughters to carry on this family legacy of teaching manners to children as a way to better their community.  With her legacy in mind, they have memorialized teachings that are over 60 years old through the publication of French Fries and Thank You

With the goal of making etiquette education affordable for all children through their book, they hope to reach families all over the country.  Spreading this message that good manners are door openers, and all children should have access, they have also partnered with local organizations KidsOnPoint and Horizons at Ashley Hall to teach underprivileged children their signature "French Fries and Thank You" class for free.

In addition to their classes and newly published book, they also sell thank you notes, place setting placemats, and other manners-related products to enhance manners education at home.  Their curriculums are for sale for women who want to start their own manners business in other communities as well, for an affordable one time price.

Lowcountry Etiquette's classes are fun and interactive, and as the book title implies, the meals are always served with French Fries and a little bit of fun. Check out all of the exciting things they are working on at lowcountryetiquette.com or on Instagram @lowcountryetiquette.

Guided by Margo Duke, who is an experienced instructor, you will explore the basics of layering, shaping, and embellishing your felted creations.

This class is perfect for beginners, and anyone interested in exploring felt making.

All supplies and refreshments included.

MORE ABOUT MARGO DUKE…

Margo considers herself a pioneer. She was born in Scotland and came to the US with her +++++family when she was twelve; the love of working with fiber and color in her genes. Some of Margo’sancestors were Harris Tweed weavers and even today still live on the island of Stornoway in the same croftwhere they used to weave, surrounded by their flock of sheep. It was a dream come true to visit them several years ago.

This journey into the world of felting began when she first discovered the Baby Lock Embellisher and was infact, one of the first to own this new tool. This fascinating needle felting machine has provided many hours of pleasure and has truly become a wonderful and colorful obsession. Today, however, Margo focuses primarily on Nuno felting using silk, wool, soap and water, however, can still be found at the Embellisher adding special touches. Margo was given the opportunity of teaching Baby Lock USA dealers at their St. Louis annual conference how to use the Embellisher in 2005 as well as design projects for their website and kits for their instructors; she provided her samples to Baby Lock for teaching events and conferences from time-to-time and has given many presentations and lectures about her craft and appeared in one of their ads to promote their machine.

By endless experimentation and learning how to incorporate machine needle and wet felting, Margo has taken felting one step further and finds no greater satisfaction than seeing the magical colors and texture come together; she won numerous ribbons and awards for her garments year after year at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival including Best of Show in 2012 prior to moving to the Low Country. Margo had the opportunity to study under many world-class instructors in felt making as well as numerous other crafts while she lived in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Never one to stop learning and expanding her knowledge, some other passions besides felt making share her life: studying, endless experimenting, documenting, eco printing and natural dyeing have all become obsessions. Margo is honored to share her experiences when invited to give a workshop – she loves all things fiber related and has yet another obsession – Joomchi! (the ancient art of Korean paper making) and teaches that as well. Margo (Her Majesty Margo) has been fortunate enough to be invited to share her felting experience by traveling and teaching at events all over the US and in fact has taught in the Netherlands, Australia and in Scotland; this sharing of information has indeed become another passion and has only served to enhance her own knowledge and has permitted her to connect with the most amazing people and to make a myriad of lifelong friends. Sincemoving to the SC, Margo has taught at Artworks, Coastal Art Supply, the Fiber Guild of the Savannahs andSpring Island. She was invited to share her work via a feature in the 2011 issue of FUN magazine, an article in the December 2021 issue of LOCAL Life and her Hilton Head Garden Club entry will also be included in their May 2023 issue. This year, Margo was fortunate enough to win the Surface Design Award of Excellence forher entry in FACE (Fiber Guild of the Rockies) in Estes Park, Colorado, and can be viewed on You Tube; she is a member of The Fiber Guild of the Savannahs as well as FAB (Fiber Guild of Beaufort, SC)

FINDING YOUR VOICE - Week 3 of 4 Creative Writing Workshops with Local Author, Pat Branning

Instructor: Pat Branning, author of seven bestselling books on the Lowcountry and the voice behind the bi-weekly Substack The Diary of a Southern Author at patbranning.com.

SPECIAL NOTE: A MUTUALLY CONVENIENT DATE FOR WEEK 4 OF THIS SERIES WILL BE DETERMINED AND POSTED AFTER FEBRUARY 5TH.

There is a moment—quiet, persistent—when a story asks to be told.

Not a grand story.

Not a polished one.

Just yours.

This four-week creative writing workshop invites writers of all backgrounds to explore memory, place, and personal experience as the foundation of meaningful storytelling. Guided by author Pat Branning, participants will learn to write vivid scenes, develop cofidence, write honestly, and discover the power already living in their own voice.

Join us at Village Social Habersham, Thursdays, 6 pm to 7:30 pm January 8, 15, 22, and 29.

Note… The information taught in this 4 part series is cumlative and weekly attendance at each session is encoraged. Please see weekly lesson plan below. TICKETS FOR EACH SESSION MUST BE PURCHASED SEPARATELY ON THE CORRESPONDING EVENT LISTING.

Postponed until 2/5!!

Pat Conroy Literary Center executive director Jonathan Haupt and poet Tim Conroy will discuss the nature writing of Pat Conroy, the bestselling author of The Water Is Wide, The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides, and more. This presentation will highlight representative examples of Conroy’s nature writing from across the span of his writing life, drawing attention to how Conroy’s relationship with nature is also ultimately a relationship with his deeply felt spiritual and humanistic faith.
